I'm gonna take it easy for the moment, just clearing one cloister at a time with maxed out characters. Note to self: remember to get ALL THE TENTS/COTTAGES.

Cloister of Beginnings: CLEARED

PC: Terra Branford (Alt 1)
Party: 1 (yep Terra solo'd this cloister)
Assists: Several (didn't count them)

Cloister of Encounters: Stopped at 13th Floor
PC: Terra Branford (Alt 1)
Party: Terra, Squall, WoL, Ultimecia
Assists: Gabranth, Golbez, Laguna, Lightning
Reason: Failed to meet Door requirement

Cloister of Encounters (2nd Attempt): CLEARED
PC: Terra Branford
Party: Terra, Squall, Bartz, Ultimecia, Sephiroth
Assists: Lost track XD

Is it that bad?

But it can be frustrating if you play other FFs and get used to the faster systems. The fact that there's no break damage limit or extreme stat boosting equipment does make it a little tedious as well...

Depends on which games you mean. *was totally lost with VIII's junction system and XII's gambit system*

Well I played FFIX first and spent about 3 years before I played any other FFs so I'm a poor judge but I got wicked addicted to X's battle system and VII's too for that matter. (I know what you mean. I eventually figured out both but it took me a long time and I went through the first playthrough of both games with very weak characters that died a lot)

I've got the guidebooks somewhere. I'll try and rustle up an easy explination somehow.

Basically with VIII you have to get 100 of each spell if you can and assign the strongest spells to your stats. For example, junctioning Cure/Cura/Curaga/Life/Full-Life to your HP raises it exponentionally. Of course you have to make sure the GF you've equipped is capable of learning that ability.

With the gambits you need to be very precise about what you want your characters to do and which gambits take priority. So if you want them to attack the party leader's target first and nearby enemies second then you must make sure those two seperate gambits are queued up properly. So attack------> party leader's target and attack --------> closest enemy. Also gambits such as KO'd ally -----------> phoenix down/raise or ally HP 20% ---------> Hi Potion/Curaga are incredibly useful too. Problem is that sometimes it's best to turn them off since you might just want to sneak through a dungeon and your party will immeadiately start chasing nearby mooks.

And they expect this by Disc 1 too...?

That seems impossible to pull off. As for the gambits...Well tbh I never really saw the point as I like to have control of the entire party...>>;;;;
